Is AI killing your website traffic? Here’s how to tell.
Is AI killing my website traffic?
Sometimes, and you can check. If your rankings held but clicks fell on queries that now show an AI Overview, the AI answer is taking the click. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears (December 2025 data). That part is structural. Rule out your redesign and Google first.
How do you know AI took the clicks?
| Signal | What it means | How to check it yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Average position holds | Google still ranks you where it did. | In Search Console, compare average position for your top queries before and after the drop. |
| Impressions hold | People still search, and still see your result. | Same report: compare impressions for the same queries. |
| Clicks fall | Fewer of those people click through. | Same report: compare clicks. If position and impressions held and clicks fell, keep going. |
| An AI Overview sits above your result | The question gets answered on Google’s page. | Search your top lost queries yourself and look for an AI answer above your link. |
| Queries without AI answers held up | The AI answer is the difference. | Compare clicks on queries that show no AI answer. |
What does the research show?
- With an AI summary on the results page, Google users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked in 15%. (Pew Research Center, browsing data from 900 US adults in March 2025, published July 22, 2025)
- When an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page’s click-through rate is 58% lower. (Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords, December 2025 data, published February 4, 2026)
These are averages across the web. Your Search Console data shows what happened to your queries.
How we test this suspect
The other two suspects first. Site breaks and Google updates can be fixed or waited out. We rule them in or out before we call anything structural.
Rankings that held (Autopsy). In Search Console we find queries where impressions and average position held steady but clicks fell.
AI answers on those queries. We check which of them now show an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer, and who those answers cite.
A control group. We compare your queries that show no AI answer. If their clicks held while the others fell, the AI answer is the difference.
The price. We put a monthly dollar figure on the clicks AI is taking, so you know the size of the structural loss.
What we can’t see: clicks lost to chat assistants leave no record in Search Console. We can only measure searches that still happen on Google.
What else looks like AI?
Your rankings fell too.
Then it isn’t only AI. A ranking loss points to a Google update or a site problem.
GoogleYour old pages broke.
A relaunch can cut clicks in ways that look like AI.
Your redesign
What has this looked like?
We don’t have a public AI-caused case file yet. Our four case files are a redesign, a domain move, and two Google updates.
Can AI-lost traffic come back?
No, not by fixing your site. A click lost to an AI answer grades as Structural: the search results changed, and nothing on your side changes them back. We say so plainly so you can stop spending on it.
Why don’t we sell a fix?
Nothing we know of returns a click that Google’s AI now answers in full. We won’t sell AI citations either, because Google decides who gets cited and nobody can guarantee it.
So for AI-caused losses, the Autopsy is the whole job. Its AI exposure map tells you:
- which lost queries are gone for good, and what they were worth;
- which ones still send clicks and are worth defending;
- who the AI answers cite instead of you, on every lost query that shows one;
- where your search budget does more from here.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead?
No, but some of its clicks are. Queries that AI answers in full send fewer visitors. Queries where people still need to compare, buy or contact someone tend to keep more of their clicks. The Autopsy shows you which of yours are which.
Can you get us cited in AI Overviews?
No one can promise that, so we don’t. The AI exposure map shows who gets cited on your lost queries, which tells you what those pages have.
We rank first and get fewer clicks. Is that AI?
That’s the pattern to check first. Search the query and see whether an AI Overview now sits above your result. The Autopsy confirms it across every query.
Will AI take more of our traffic?
We don’t forecast Google. We tell you what has already happened to your queries, with evidence.
